Cryo Tubes

TPP cryo tubes – secure storage down to -196 °C

TPP cryo tubes made from polypropylene (PP) with external thread and star foot design are engineered for the secure storage of biological samples under cryogenic conditions, including in gas phase of nitrogen environments.

At ultra-low temperatures, material stress can occur. The optimized tube design combined with high-quality raw materials ensures mechanical integrity and reliable handling during storage and retrieval.

Design and safety advantages

  • External thread design enables a secure seal without the need for a silicone O-ring
  • Reduced risk of contamination by minimizing additional sealing components
  • Smooth internal surface minimizes sample loss during retrieval
  • Designed for reliable sealing performance in cryogenic storage conditions

Handling & identification

  • Color-coded inserts for fast and clear sample identification
  • Large writing area for easy labeling
  • Clear graduations for volume control

Workflow & storage efficiency

  • Self-standing design with star foot for stable bench handling
  • Compatible with standard cryo racks and storage systems
  • Supplied in durable, resealable bags (puncture- and tear-resistant) with zip closure and laser perforation
  • Designed for efficient daily laboratory workflows

Compared to internally threaded cryovials or systems requiring additional sealing element such as for example O-rings, the TPP design offers reduced complexity by this lowers the risk of sample loss, thus improving usability in cryogenic workflows.

Handling and packaging advantages
  • All cryo tubes feature a star foot design and are self-standing for stable bench handling

Star foot rack system

  • In combination with cryo tube rack #99016, enables true one-handed operation
  • The star foot locks into the rack positions, preventing tube rotation
  • Improves handling reliability during opening, closing, and pipetting

Laser perforation

  • No tools required: bags can be opened easily and cleanly without scissors
  • Intact laser perforation also serves as a tamper-evident seal

Zipper system

  • Resealable zipper allows clean, repeated opening and closing
  • Supports low-contamination storage after initial opening

Recommendations
  • TPP recommends to use cryo tubes for storage in the gas/vapor phase above the liquefied nitrogen (LN2).
  • However, if you chose to store in the liquid LN2 TPP recommends the use of additional wrapping such as welded tubes. Through a small entry ports - such as not correctly tighten caps - LN2 can enter the vial. During defrosting the port is to small for the fast expanding LN2 . The result is, that the material cannot withstand the high pressure and will explode. The spread of the contents and contamination can be the result.

Always use appropriate safety equipment and procedures.

Filling Volume

It is important, that the Cryo tubes are not filled up to the maximal possible filling volume. This is so the cell suspension has the possibility to expand during the freezing process (recom: 0.2 ml less than max. graduation of the tubes).
