TubeSpin® Bioreactor

TubeSpin® Bioreactors – scalable platform for suspension cell culture

TubeSpin® Bioreactors are designed for high-throughput screening, upstream process development, and optimization of suspension cell lines. They enable bioprocess development and scale-up studies using minimal sample volumes while maintaining maximum experimental parallelization.

Unlike conventional cell culture vessels, no additional harvesting or transfer step is required: cells can be directly centrifuged and further processed within the same vessel.

The TubeSpin® Bioreactor 87600 design is protected by an international design patent (WIPO/OMPI, 2023), highlighting its leading position in orbitally shaken single-use bioreactor technology.

System advantages over conventional culture vessels

  • Higher throughput and parallelization than shake flasks or bottles
  • Improved process transferability due to defined geometry
  • Reduced handling steps through integrated workflow design
  • Enhanced oxygen transfer compared to static culture systems
  • Cost-efficient early-stage process development without bioreactor miniaturization

Good to know!

Recommendation

Orbital throw and rotational speed are important factors for the success. Pay also attention to the maximal weight with which the shaker can be loaded.

From swirling of wine to bioreactors - the essence of orbital shaking

An interesting film from scientists at EPFL that have managed to model the shape of the wave created in a glass of wine while swirling it. They figured out that given parameters allow reproducing the exact wave form, whatever the size of the recipient. These finding are useful to better calibrate orbital shaking bioreactors for cell culture. See original scientific footage (source: youTube).

Water loss

  • If small culture volumes are incubated over a longer period of time, the loss of water influences the growth of cells.
  • By the closure of one or several openings above the gas permeable and sterile PTFE membrane, this water loss can be minimized.

Steril gas exchange is guaranteed through the 0.22 µm pore size PTFE filter membrane.
